Research Interests
The Multiscale Bioimaging and Bioinformatics Laboratory at Tulane University has three research themes: 1. Fundamental research on multiscale signal/image representation and analysis; 2. Multiscale bioimaging analysis from organ and tissue levels to molecular and cellular levels; and 3. Bioinformatics in human genomics and cytogenetics. Currently, we are working on information extraction and integration from multiscale and multimodality genomic imaging data. One of our goals is to bring the biomedical technique into commercial use. We are using a multidisciplinary approach and working closely with computational scientists, statisticians, medical geneticists and industrial engineers at Tulane Medical Center and all over the world.
Abstract
As a powerful statistical and computational approach developed recently, sparse data representations including compressive sensing techniques have found successful applications in many disciplines such as signal and image processing, communications, medical imaging and geophysical data analysis. In this talk, I will present our recent research on the development of sparse models, with a focus on their applications to a variety of bioimaging and bioinformatics problems. We will show a variety of examples on the use of sparse representation models for the analysis of microarray imaging, cancer subtyping, chromosome image classification and integration of SNPs and fMRI imaging data for diseases diagnosis, demonstrating their powerful applications.

Abstract
In the last decade, compressive sensing emerged in various scientific and engineering fields. With fruitful results, it brings profound impact on our research communities. Applications can be found in machine learning, medical image processing, data mining, and many other areas. In the first part of the presentation, a brief introduction of the compressive sensing will be given, followed by the mathematical modeling, the theoretical conditions concerning the recovery of sparse signals, and the algorithms to tackle the variants and extensions based on sparse modeling. The second part of the presentation will focus on the application of compressive sensing to the emerging next generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis; examples on the detection of copy number variations from NGS for disease diagnosis will be given.
